London 2012 ExCeL Exhibition Centre Venue
The Olympics are perhaps the greatest sporting event in the world of sports. It is held every fourth year and several nations and thousands of athletes from all over the world take part in the games. The 2012 Summer Olympics is scheduled to be held in London, United Kingdom from the 27th of July to the 12th of August 2012. It is officially known as the Games of the XXX Olympiad. 26 different types of sports would be held during these days at 34 astonishing venues, some of which have been especially constructed for the 2012 Olympic Games. Parallel to this the 2012 Summer Paralympic Games will also be held at London between 29th of August till the 9th of September 2012. Some of the older venues have been modified and some have been and will be built for the sole purpose of the 2012 Games. All the venues for the Olympics have been divided into three zones; the River zone, the Central Zone and the Olympic Zone.
The ExCeL Exhibition Centre Venue is an old permanent venue that will be used in the 2012 Summer Olympic Games for Boxing, Table tennis, Fencing, Wrestling, Judo, Weight lifting and Taekwondo. Four separate Arenas will be used inside the ExCel with capacities ranging between 6000 and 10000. The Arena is situated on a 100 acre site in the northern quay of the Royal Victoria Dock in London Docklands which is midway between Canary Wharf and London City Airport. The Excel Exhibition centre was built by Sir Robert McAlpine. It was opened in November 2000 and was acquired by Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company in May 2008. The Second Phase was completed on the 1st of May 2010. The total cost of the expansion was about £164m and it increased the space of the centre by 50%; i.e. almost 100000 m². The expansion added further event space, meeting space and banqueting facilities. The new expansion also included a flexible 5,000 seat International Conference Hall. The Arena features excellent road links with the rest of the City. The Venue includes three on site DLR stations and features a parking space for 2600 cars. There are 5 on site hotels and numerous bars and restaurants in the campus.
After the Games, the ExCeL London will revert to its role as one of Europe’s largest and most versatile exhibition spaces and continue serving its people.
