London 2012 Basketball Arena Venue
The 2012 Olympic Games also known as the Games of the XXX Olympiad will be held in the city of London, United Kingdom from the 27th of July till the 12th of August. During these 17 days London would be hosting 26 different types of sports at 34 astonishing venues situated all over the place. All the venues have been divided broadly into three zones: the Olympic Zone, the Central Zone and the River Zone. The Basket ball Arena is situated in the Olympic Zone. Some of the pre existing venues have been modified and some others have been planned to be solely constructed for the 2012 Games. The Basketball arena is one of the newly designed and is still under construction.
The Basketball Arena was previously planned to be constructed in the west of the Olympic park which is to the north west of the Olympic stadium, but later its location was shifted to the former site of the Fencing Hall which is to the north of the Park. The basketball arena will be amongst one of the largest temporary venues built ever for any games. The arena is connected to the rest of the city by the three gateway stations: Stratford Regional, West Ham and Stratford International and also a number of walking and cycling routes will be made available to the people to reach the place.
The Arena is designed to be used for Basketball, Handball, Wheelchair Basketball and Wheelchair Rugby and will have a capacity of 12000 spectators during the Olympic Games and 10000 during the Paralympic Games. The designs for the Arena were prepared by Sinclair Knight Merz, Wilkinson Eyre and KSS Design Group and the designs were finalised in the month of June 2008.
When the games will be going on there will be only a period of just 22 hours available to transform the venue from the Basketball competition to the Handball competition finals which will include the removing of the Basketball posts and installation of the Handball goals and field of play mat.
Then, during the Paralympic Games also there will be just 12 hours available to get the grounds prepared for the Wheelchair Rugby after the Wheelchair Basketball competition is over, where similar changes will be required.
The venue’s ‘back of house’ area will be shared with the VeloPark venues to make the most efficient use of space and resources. This will include two courts in temporary accommodation and areas for catering, security, waste management and the media.
After the Olympic Games the Arena will be taken down and parts of it is expected to be relocated somewhere else in UK.
